Honouring Reconciliation Week 2025 in ECEC

Reconciliation Week (27 May – 3 June) is a time for all Australians to reflect, learn and take meaningful steps toward ensuring every single Australian feels a sense of unity and belonging.

At Bonkers Beat, we believe it’s never too early to begin planting the seeds of understanding, respect, and inclusion. Early childhood education provides a powerful foundation for fostering reconciliation through daily practice, honest conversation and celebration of the rich and beautiful Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.

The heart of this important week centres around acknowledging our shared history and working together for a brighter future. For educators, this means providing children with age-appropriate experiences that build cultural awareness, empathy and a sense of belonging for all.

We are privileged to live in a country that is home to the world’s oldest living cultures, with over 65,000 years of continuous connection to land, language, and tradition! Here are a few ways your centre can meaningfully engage with Reconciliation Week this year:

Include Indigenous stories, music and language in your learning spaces. Reading picture books by Aboriginal authors or playing traditional songs creates valuable opportunities for children to connect with First Nations cultures. Better yet, have a local Indigenous community member come and share stories and songs with children.

Reflect on your own practices and environment. Is your centre visibly inclusive? Do you have artwork, flags, or signage that respectfully acknowledges Country? Do your programs embed Indigenous perspectives year-round, not just during special weeks?

Talk with children about fairness, respect, and caring for others. While complex history may not be able to be fully unpacked at such a young age, children are naturally empathetic and open to learning about diversity and kindness.

Reconciliation is not a one-week event but an ongoing journey. As educators, we have the responsibility to help children grow up in a country that honours all Australians, including First Peoples and values respect and unity.

Let’s walk together, little feet and big hearts, toward reconciliation.
