Little Bodies, Calm Minds: Celebrating International Day of Yoga

Every year on 21 June, people all around the world roll out their mats for International Day of Yoga – a celebration of a practice that has been nurturing bodies and minds for thousands of years.

Yoga is often thought of as something for adults, but it is absolutely something that children can and should enjoy too!

Why Yoga Belongs in Childhood

The early years are when children are building the foundations for life, physically, emotionally and socially. Yoga supports all three!

Simple poses help develop strength, balance, flexibility and coordination, while breathing exercises give children something truly powerful: a way to calm themselves, settle big feelings and find stillness in a busy world.

When children learn to take a deep belly breath or stretch into a favourite pose, they’re not just moving their bodies, but also learning self-regulation skills they’ll carry with them for life. Not to mention, it’s lots of fun and feels amazing!

Yoga Every Day, the Bonkers Beat Way

At Bonkers Beat, yoga isn’t saved for special occasions. It’s part of every day.

Daily yoga and mindfulness exercises are woven into our programs because we’ve seen, year after year, what a difference these practices make.

Children become calmer, more focused and more confident. Educators tell us their rooms feel more settled. Families notice the difference at home, too.

Simple Ways to Celebrate at Home or in Your Service

You don’t need special equipment or experience to mark International Day of Yoga with the children in your life.

Try a few animal poses together: cat, cobra, downward dog. Let children make the matching sounds to add some extra fun.

Practise “smell the flower, blow out the candle” breathing. Or wind down before rest time with a quiet body scan, wiggling and relaxing from toes to nose.

The beauty of yoga is its simplicity and accessibility. A few mindful minutes a day can become a habit, and this habit can become a gift for life.

A Practice Worth Sharing

This International Day of Yoga, we invite you to pause, breathe and stretch alongside the children around you. You might just find it’s the calmest part of everyone’s day.
