The Future Starts With Us: Celebrating Our Early Childhood Educators

Behind so many of the special moments in a child’s earliest years of learning is an educator.

The first time they write their name. The day they make a new friend. The moment they finally join the group after watching quietly from the sidelines. The song they suddenly know all the words to. The tricky new skill they’ve been practising and practising until, one day, they get it.

Educators are there for those milestones. And they’re also there for all the little moments in between.

Finding the missing blue cup. Helping with a stubborn zip. Sitting with a child having a hard morning. Starting a song when the room needs a little lift.

Together these moments help shape how children learn, grow, connect and see themselves.

And behind them, every day, is an educator.

On Wednesday 2 September, Early Childhood Educators’ Day gives us the opportunity to celebrate the incredible people who make early learning environments such special places. This year’s theme is: The Future Starts With Us!

The amazing work educators do every day

Ask an early childhood educator what they did today and the answer could probably fill a book! They teach, sing, dance, observe, plan, listen, encourage, clean, create, problem-solve, comfort and somehow keep track of all the water bottles, hats and pairs of socks and shoes!

Underneath all of that activity is something even more important: relationships.

Young children learn through connection. They explore more confidently when they feel safe, and they try again when someone believes they can. They learn how to understand emotions, communicate, cooperate and navigate the world through the relationships around them.

That makes the everyday interactions between children and their educators incredibly powerful.

The future starts in small moments

Shaping the future happens when all the little moments in a day, a week, a year come together.

It’s the moments an educator helps a child find the words to say, “Can I have a turn?”, and it’s encouraging the child who says, “I can’t do it,” to give it another go.

It might be clapping a rhythm together, taking a few slow breaths after a busy transition, dancing away some extra energy or creating a quiet moment to reset.

These experiences may seem small while they’re happening, but together they help children build confidence, resilience, curiosity, creativity and a sense of belonging.

And those are things they carry with them long after they leave their early learning centre.

A little music can go a long way

At Bonkers Beat, we have the privilege of working with passionate early childhood educators who bring music and wellbeing into children’s days in wonderfully creative ways.

One of the things we love most is seeing educators make these practices their own.

When a familiar song becomes part of a transition or a breathing exercise helps everyone slow down. Music creates a shared moment between educators and children that might be joyful, calming, silly or loud.

Thank you to the educators who bring those experiences to life!

A few simple ways to say thank you

Early Childhood Educators’ Day is a lovely opportunity for both services and families to make educators feel seen and appreciated.

For services:

  • Organise a team morning tea, lunch or small surprise during the day.
  • Create a gratitude wall where children, families and colleagues can leave messages.
  • Share individual shout-outs celebrating the strengths each educator brings to the team.
  • Build in a little extra time for connection, recognition or simply enjoying something together.

For families:

  • Write a personal note sharing something you appreciate about the way an educator supports your child.
  • Encourage your child to make a card, drawing or little message of their own.
  • Share a favourite moment or story that shows the difference their educator has made.
  • Some simply taking a moment at drop-off or pick-up to say a heartfelt thank you is enough.

It doesn’t need to be elaborate. A small gesture that says we see what you do, and we appreciate it can mean a great deal.

Today, we celebrate you

Early Childhood Educators’ Day is a chance to recognise the extraordinary contribution educators make to the lives of young children and their families.

So this September, we encourage families, leaders and communities take a moment to notice everything educators bring to children’s days.
