Fun Activities to Bring in Autumn

Autumn is here and with it comes a season of transformation. This is a unique time of year where we can really see the changing of seasons — leaves of trees changing colour and falling, the summer sun fading into crisper weather, and shorter days with the sun rising later and setting earlier.

As early childhood educators and parents, this is an amazing opportunity to engage children in the beauty and lessons of the changing seasons. A great way to inspire curiosity, creativity, and learning through hands-on experiences.

Exploring Nature’s Changes

Autumn offers a sensory-rich environment for children to observe and explore.

Take learning outdoors and encourage children to notice the changes in the trees, the feel of the cooler air, and the sounds of leaves crunching beneath their feet.

A nature walk can be exciting for children to collect different types of leaves or gumnuts or banksia cones. This opens up a range of activities such as:

  • Leaf rubbings
  • Sorting by colour and shape
  • Arranging Autumn mandalas
  • Creating an autumn nature collage
  • Building Autumn wreaths or nature crowns

Seasonal Music and Movement

We all know what a powerful tool music can be for engaging young minds, and what better way to welcome Autumn than with the Bonkers Beat ‘Four Seasons’ instrumental piece of music and printables

Singing and dancing about the seasons helps children connect with and celebrate nature’s rhythms while also enhancing their language development and self-expression.

Pair the music with movement activities — encourage children to sway like trees in the wind, fall like leaves, or dance like raindrops in an autumn shower.

Autumn-Inspired STEM

Let Autumn be part of the learning experiences in STEM activities too. These are some fun ones to look at:

  • Apple & Leaf Sink or Float Experiment: Gather different leaves and small fruits, then predict whether they will sink or float in a tub of water.
  • Nocturnal Animals & Migration: Discuss how some birds migrate in autumn and explore the different nocturnal animals like possums and owls.
  • Planting bulbs for spring: Teach patience and nature’s cycles by planting bulbs now for future blooms.

Learning Through Seasonal Storytelling

Stories bring the magic of autumn to life and are a wonderful way to build early literacy skills. Encourage discussions about what children see and feel in their environment, fostering their observation and comprehension skills. Here are some books to consider:

Bushland Lullaby by Sally Odgers & Lisa Stewart: A beautifully illustrated bedtime book that celebrates Australia’s bushland animals preparing for the colder months.

Can You Find Me? by Gordon Winch & Patrick Shirvington: A lovely book highlighting how Australian animals camouflage in different seasons, perfect for autumn nature walks.

Leaf Trouble by Jonathan Emmett & Caroline Jayne Church: This book tells the story of a little squirrel experiencing the changes of autumn for the first time.

Celebrating the Magic Around Us

By embracing autumn’s changes, children can develop a deeper appreciation for nature while engaging in meaningful, playful learning experiences.

Complement these activities with the Bonkers Beat ‘Four Seasons’ printable resources, which add a musical and interactive element to the seasonal learning journey.

Autumn is a season of wonder — so let’s explore, dance, and celebrate together!
