Hands-on Ways to Celebrate Father’s Day

Father’s Day is a special occasion each year celebrating dads and other father figures in our lives. It’s always nice to bring a little Father’s Day magic into early childhood education to show dads how much they are loved and appreciated!

While cards and gifts are nice, there are countless ways to celebrate fathers that go beyond the usual, creating lasting memories and deepening the connection between children and the special men in their lives.

Here are some practical ideas for educators and centres to make Father’s Day truly memorable this year:

  1. Father-Child Workshops

Host a hands-on workshop where fathers and their children can work together on a simple project. Whether it’s crafting, cooking or building something small, these activities foster collaboration and give fathers a chance to engage in their child’s world.

A seed or succulent planting station is one example that’s simple to set up while being fun and educational, allowing children to explore creativity and teamwork with dads. Decorate the pot, pop in some soil and plant succulent cuttings for something special to nurture and grow together over time.

  1. Create a ‘My Dad and Me’ Memory Book

Help children create a simple memory book that they can fill with drawings, photos, and short stories about their favourite moments with their dads. This personalised book can be something they work on in the days leading up to Father’s Day and present to their fathers or other role models as a heartfelt gift. Keep it inclusive too by offering options other than ‘dad’ — maybe grandpa, uncle or friend could work too.

  1. Craft a Father’s Day Trophy

Let the children create their own ‘Best Dad’ trophies using materials like cardboard, foil, and paint. This hands-on craft allows children to express their appreciation creatively, and dads will love receiving a personalised award made just for them. Again, be flexible to keep it inclusive for all family structures.

  1. Father-Child Cooking Class

Host a simple cooking class where children and their special visitors can prepare a meal or a snack together. Choose a recipe that’s easy and fun, like making pizzas or decorating cupcakes. This activity promotes bonding and allows children to practice following instructions and working together with their fathers.

  1. Father’s Day Photo Booth

Make the most of any dress ups you have at your service to create a fun photo booth with props and a backdrop where children and their dads can take silly or sweet photos together. You could print the photos on the spot and let the children decorate frames to take home as a keepsake, or send photos to your centre’s app or directly to parent phones — whatever is appropriate for your service. This activity is not only a fun bonding experience but also provides a lasting memory of the day.

  1. Special Activities for Dads

We can’t let Father’s Day pass without sharing our Bonkers Beat ‘My Daddy’ poem! You can download this poem for free here. Children might like to perform it at your Father’s Day event, or add the words to cards or craft.

Celebrating Father’s and their Special Role

Father’s Day is a time to celebrate the important role that fathers play in their children’s lives, and early childhood centres can play a significant part in making this day special.

A few thoughtful, hands-on activities that foster father-child connection can create memorable experiences that extend beyond early childhood. These activities also help foster a strong sense of community within the centre, bringing families closer together in the process.

Happy Father’s Day everyone!
