As the days grow longer and the weather warms up, spring is the perfect time for children to enjoy more outdoor play. Garden adventures, playground fun, trips to the beach… There are so many outdoor experiences to choose from to support wellbeing, physical development, and connection with nature.
But as educators and families know, more sunshine also means an increased need to stay SunSmart!
Australia experiences some of the highest levels of UV radiation in the world, which is why learning good sun protection habits early in life is so important. And as educators, we can play an important role in building lifelong SunSmart habits.
Make UV Awareness Part of the Routine
Spring can be tricky because it doesn’t always seem “hot enough” to worry. However, it doesn’t have to be hot to get sunburnt.
UV levels can rise quickly even on cool or cloudy days. Encourage educators and families to use the SunSmart app or check the Bureau of Meteorology for daily, accurate UV alerts. You can even make it part of the morning routine to check UV levels together with the children before heading outdoors.
Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek and Slide
The classic SunSmart message still stands strong (and has even expanded since its inception back in the 80s!)
- Slip on protective clothing that covers shoulders and arms.
- Slop on SPF 30+ broad-spectrum sunscreen, 20 minutes before going outside.
- Slap on a wide-brimmed hat that shades the face, neck and ears.
- Seek shade whenever possible: under trees, verandas or playground shelters.
- Slide on sunglasses with UV protection when appropriate.
Encouraging children to understand why we follow these steps helps them develop ownership of their own sun safety.
Create Naturally Shaded Play Spaces
Sun protection doesn’t mean staying indoors. Shade sails, pergolas, and trees can transform outdoor play areas into cool, inviting spaces.
Where possible, integrate natural elements such as garden beds, leafy shrubs and climbing plants to enhance both shade and sensory learning experiences.
Lead by Example
As we all know, children learn best by watching the adults around them. When educators and parents apply sunscreen and wear hats, it reinforces the message that SunSmart behaviours are for everyone. Find a hat you love and wear it with pride!
