National Recycling Week takes place from 11–17 November and it is the perfect time to remind children (and ourselves) that small actions can make a big difference.
When we teach children to care for the planet, we’re helping them build habits of respect, responsibility, and creativity that last a lifetime.
Learning through hands-on experiences
Early childhood is all about exploration. By engaging children in recycling and sustainability activities, we help them see how their actions contribute to a cleaner, healthier world.
Sorting materials, reusing everyday items, and understanding where waste goes are powerful lessons in environmental awareness.
Try these fun, hands-on ideas:
- Recycling detectives: Create a sorting station where children can separate paper, plastic, and metal. Talk about what happens to each material once it’s recycled.
- Upcycling art: Use boxes, bottles, and scrap materials to create new artworks or inventions. Encourage imagination — a cereal box could become a rocket, or an egg carton a garden of flowers!
- Compost corner: Set up a small compost bin for food scraps and teach children about how organic waste becomes food for plants.
- Sustainable stories: Read books about caring for the planet, recycling, and animals affected by pollution. Follow up with group discussions about how children can help.
Embedding sustainability in everyday practice
Recycling shouldn’t be a one-week event, but a mindset. Educators and families can help children see that caring for the environment is part of everyday life. Encourage:
- Reusable lunchboxes and drink bottles
- Sharing pre-loved toys or clothing swaps
- Turning off lights and taps when not in use
- Collecting bottle tops, bread tags, or batteries for community recycling programs
Why it matters
When children learn to “reduce, reuse, and reimagine,” they develop problem-solving skills, empathy, and environmental consciousness.
These small lessons today can lead to big changes tomorrow and contribute to shaping a generation that values sustainability and stewardship.
Together, we make a difference
