Staying Active and Healthy in the Winter Break

With the winter school holidays nearly here and the temperatures dropping fast, it’s tempting to hibernate indoors until the sun returns.

But the colder months can be a wonderful time for children to stay active, healthy, and happy. Especially if we’re intentional about how we spend them.

At Bonkers Beat, we believe that children thrive when their bodies are moving, their minds are stimulated, and their spirits are nurtured. Yes, even in winter!

Why Winter Wellness Matters

Winter is notorious for bringing sniffles and sluggishness, but staying active is one of the best ways to support children’s immune systems, mood, and overall wellbeing.

Why? Lots of reasons! Physical movement boosts circulation, helps regulate sleep, and releases feel-good endorphins – all key ingredients for a healthy mind and body and essential for children’s development.

Fun Ways to Keep Moving (Even When It’s Cold!)

Movement supports physical and mental health, builds coordination, and helps children work through that extra winter energy. Not to mention it can be lots of fun!

Layer up and head outdoors

  • Go on a nature treasure hunt
  • Create an obstacle course in the yard or park
  • Walk or scooter somewhere instead of driving
  • Play winter-themed tag (like freeze tag)

Bring the movement inside

  • Dance party with freeze dance
  • Follow-along yoga with our Bonkers Beat yoga cards
  • Bonkers Beat music and movement sessions
  • Balloon “Keepie Uppie”

Make it playful

  • Set up a lounge room obstacle course
  • Do animal walks — crab, bear, frog jumps
  • Hold a mini talent show or fashion parade
  • Play ‘Simon Says’ with action moves

Try winter-themed games

  • Waddle like a penguin or curl up like a hibernating bear
  • Pretend to shovel snow or build a snowman
  • Do “snowflake spins” or “ice skating slides” on socks

Quick movement breaks

  • One yoga pose each hour
  • Dance to one song before lunch
  • Stretch-and-shake in between sitting activities

Boosting Health from the Inside Out

Winter is also a time to nourish our bodies with healthy, hearty foods. Encourage children to help in the kitchen — making soups, chopping vegetables, or creating snack platters filled with colourful immune-boosting fruits and veggies.

Don’t forget the basics: plenty of water, regular sleep, and good hygiene habits go a long way in keeping those winter bugs at bay.

Let’s Thrive This Winter

Staying active and healthy during the winter break doesn’t have to be a chore. It can be a time of connection, fun, and positive growth.

Let’s embrace the chill and make the most of the winter school holiday period, bringing out the best in every child.
