Making the Most of the Winter School Holidays

The winter school holidays can often find a rhythm all their own: slow, snuggly mornings and chilly days.

Of course, not every household gets to slow down during the holidays! Many parents are still heading to work, juggling deadlines and drop-offs – and our wonderful educators are busy caring for children through the break, too. If that’s you, please be gentle with yourself!

As the holidays roll in, here are some warm ways to fill the cooler weeks with connection, creativity and calm.

When the holidays don’t slow down

First and foremost remember this: Connection doesn’t need big blocks of free time. It lives in the small, ordinary pockets of the day:

  • A favourite song in the car on the way to work or care
  • A few slow breaths and a cuddle before bed
  • A shared snack and a chat about the day, however short

These moments matter just as much as a whole afternoon of craft. Presence over perfection, always.

Let the music move you

You know that we are going to fit in music no matter what! Luckily winter is perfect for this!

When the weather keeps you indoors, your living room can become a stage, a dance floor or a marching band in the making.

  • Pop on some favourite tunes and move however the music feels. Stomp like an elephant, float like a snowflake, tip-toe like a mouse…
  • Grab pots, wooden spoons and shakers and make a little family band
  • There’s no right or wrong here – just joy, rhythm and growing confidence

Make space for mindful moments

Winter is the perfect season to slow down and breathe, and little nervous systems love a calm pause from the chaos.

  • Try a few minutes of belly breathing, watching a soft toy rise and fall on your child’s tummy
  • Wind down with some gentle yoga stretches, or a cuddle and a story
  • Add small rituals like these through the day to help children feel safe, settled and connected (and they’re lovely for grown-ups too)

Get cosy and creative

When it’s wet and wild outside, creativity comes into its own.

  • Set up a cosy craft corner and let your child paint the winter they see: grey skies, bare trees, people snuggled in scarves and coats
  • Bake something together! Measuring, stirring and waiting are rich with learning. Best of all, you get to indulge in the delicious final product!

Rug up and head outside

Don’t let the cold keep you in altogether. As the old saying goes: There’s no such thing as bad weather just inappropriate clothing!

With a warm coat, beanie and boots, a little fresh air does wonders for everyone’s mood.

  • Splash in puddles or collect fallen leaves
  • Take a slow walk around the block and notice the season together: the frosty grass, the puffed-up birds, the crisp air

Cherish the connection

If there’s one thing we hope your family takes from the break, it’s this: the simplest moments are often the most precious

The holidays don’t need to be busy (or expensive) to be meaningful – sometimes the best thing we can give children our warm, calm, wholehearted presence.
